Vonage FAX?

TSgt Mark Hansen emailed the other day from halfway around the world:

Hi Chris, I saw your webpage about Vonage and am asking for your help. I am in the Air Force stationed in Korea, and all Vonage users here are banned from using Vonage equipment on the ISP’s network, who offers their own VoiP service. They do this by blocking all port 50 traffic on their network. So basically, all bases in South Korea have this ban in effect. I went with Skype instead…

Anyways, I am trying to FAX a copy of my orders to Vonage so they can release me from the account and reimburse me. (I’m not holding my breath) I spoke to account management the other day and was given 1-732-528-2669 to fax it to them, but this is not a FAX number. I have a suspicion that theyre going to use the excuse that I never sent my orders in… how could I when the number they gave me isn’t a working FAX number?

I was curious to try FAXing over a Vonage line, but certainly never had to deal with FAXing something to them. He followed up almost immediately:

I got another one from Acct. Management… 1-732-834-0189. I havent verified reciept and closure of the account yet, I have to wait 72 hours, then call back to their wonderful customer service staff and verify…

I actually made the rep stay on the line to ensure it was a working FAX, so I called the wife on the calling card and asked her to call the number to see if it was an actual FAX machine… (remember, I havent verified they actually received it, once I do, I’ll let you know).

If you’d like, you can publish it on your site once verified to assist other Vonage victims… er, customers) They said I had to FAX it to them because they don’t have email… Multi Billion corporate entity and they don’t have email… Hmmm.

Anybody else have any experience(s) with Vonage FAXing?

The State of Tech Culture in Iowa

On my recent trip home to Iowa, I was able to meet up with several business and personal friends at a Des Moines Tweet-Up. We discussed RSS Feeds and how Twitter has replaced them for me. Nathan played “interviewer” on this video with me.

Back in ‘the day’, we used to have to visit web pages to get our information. Those pages didn’t tell us when they updated, so we had to find out manually. Then, along came RSS. The idea was you could subscribe to something, and it would tell you when there was a new update. Now comes Twitter, with its flood of information that allows me to spot trends in general. Twitter has supplanted the information I used to receive in my news aggregator. I don’t follow many websites anymore, and don’t really ’subscribe’ to anything. For me, if something is going to be relevant, I’m going to read about it on Twitter. With Twitter, I’m able to follow people much easier. As disorganized as it is, it’s easier for me to learn about personalities. You can understand thoughts and feelings much easier than you could with a simple RSS feed.

Nathan then brings up my hometown of Des Moines, Iowa. He wonders what sorts of things does Des Moines have to do to attract and retain a creative class of people? My answer is simple… imports. The chief export of the Midwest is people. The problem is that as much as you could hope to attract people with the similar mindset, to change the culture is nearly impossible. The path of least resistance is to find your way to groups, such as physical meet-ups like this one. You want to look for forward thinkers, people who have new ideas and aren’t afraid to put them into action.

Back in 1992 when I was in college, the Internet was just starting to really get off the ground, and was being offered to students. When I was ready to start having a presence on the Internet, people in Des Moines looked at me like I was a crazy man. They just weren’t ready for it. It’s the culture, and it’s not that there’s anything ‘wrong’ with it. It’s just the way it is. People have to be shown that technology isn’t a thing to be feared… it should be embraced. Iowa’s infrastructure is there, but the mind structure isn’t.

I love that I’m no longer the “ugly duckling” when I return home to Iowa. There are more and more people like me! We’re a group, and I love it! The only way to change that culture is to teach that culture. Don’t keep it inside an echo chamber. Make it real. Make connections with people online and offline. Educate them. You’ll find then that your treasures will come pouring in.

What does it Take to Drive Traffic to your Videos?

I recently uploaded a one-minute video of my laughing hysterically. In three days’ time, that video has had over 10,000 views on YouTube, and received more than 300 comments. What does it take to generate this kind of traffic? Jeff sent me an email recently, asking me what tips and tricks there are to get content to the top of search engines?

There is no one silver bullet, there are many things you can do. Not all of them will necessarily lead you down the path to success… in terms of views, attention and meeting your goals. I’ve written down three points to answer this. These are things I believe are applicable to everyone who is producing content online. Make sure you just be yourself, that is the most important.

Survey the landscape.
Use the resources at your disposal.
Embrace, empower and extend the community.

For years, you had to rely on your own devices to create content and find a place for that content to exist. These days, with the advent of sites like YouTube, it’s much simpler. I produce a Podcast that can be downloaded onto an MP3 player. I know that the greater impact would be experience on YouTube, more than anywhere on the Internet. In surveying the landscape a few years ago, I realized I needed to start driving my content to YouTube. I didn’t quit my blog … I simply learned to drive traffic to the video site, to learn more about me and what I do. I knew I would get a greater amount of return with video than with written word.

The most important thing is to embrace, empower and extend the community. One of the reasons it is crucial for me to have chat inside the videos that I do is my chat room is the closest thing I have to a live studio audience. The interaction and personal exchange between the chat members adds so much to what I do. It’s all about the community. It’s a connection, whether informative or fun. By connecting with others on many different levels, you will be able to reach out wider and further, driving more traffic to yourself. Don’t treat people like they are some remote foreign object. Treat them as though they are a very important part of your life. Let’s face it… if you’re trying to gain a following, they ARE important to you.

Unboxing an Asus Eee PC Ultraportable Computer

The super lightweight solid-state drive Asus Eee PC showed up at my house the other day. It was sent to me courtesy of Asus, specifically thanks to an engineer of theirs who is a regular community member of ours. Without further ado, let’s do the unboxing!

As I open the box… something on the inside was glowing! I pulled out things like a copy of Microsoft Works, a battery notice, and some other papers. But.. that was it. There was nothing else in the box. I guess that makes this a non-event? I’m kidding of course. I already had the Eee PC running before I began recording.

It’s so small and light. It’s just insane. I have never found myself attracted to this size of a laptop. I have always craved power. There are times, however, that you just don’t need that much power. I’ve found that having a laptop near the television is a good thing. I may want to look something up or check my email during commercials, you know. Having a lightweight laptop for that purpose is great. There is a built-in webcam on this system, so I had to try it out! I’ve already uploaded a video to YouTube, called Asus Eee PC 4G Test Recording.

Do You Like Taking Road Trips?

At the time of this recording, I was visiting back home in Iowa at my brother’s house. We’re planning a road trip to Wisconsin to see a concert he had bought tickets for. It sounds like good music, and a lot of fun. Do you enjoy road trips? What should you bring with you on a road trip? Scott sent an email in to give us some tips on things you should bring along.

Power Inverter This plugs into your cigarette lighter in your vehicle, so you can then plug in regular power cords. You would be able to plug in your laptop, or any other device. Watch a DVD while traveling (NOT if you’re driving!).
Music Use an iPod or other MP3 player going over the stero in your vehicle. Who wants to carry a huge stack of CDs with them?
Radar Detector This can help you remember to keep your foot out of it, and save on costly speeding tickets. Legalities vary from state to state, so be careful about using something like this.
GPS Navigation These can be a lifesaver when you’re heading off somewhere new.
Check your car carefully Check your car’s tires, oil, transmission fluid and any other simple maintenance items that could cause problems when on the road.

Why Would Someone Want to Blog about Magpies?

How many of you out there have a brother? I do… and when I recorded this video, I was at his house in Iowa visiting. I received an email from Findlay, asking for help getting interest generated for his brother’s blog. His brother is in the last year of Design school, and is doing a final project on Magpies dotted around areas of historical and cultural importance in London. The problem is, he needs people to see and comment on his work.

The great thing about blogging is that it makes it easy for you to publish what you’re doing. Whether you have text, photos or videos, you can throw it on the Web and get it hosted for free usually. As for rising above the noise, it’s going to be centered on what you’re publishing. I don’t know if your brother has given background notes on his project, or maybe broken out parts of it and gone into deeper detail. Maybe he could give some background even, on where he got his inspiration. Comments will swell around the blog more if there is a story or dialogue, or even by asking questions of the audience.

If this is a visual project, make sure he posts a lot of pictures and videos. Heck, give more background and information on the Magpies themselves. As long as you treat the blog as a kind of pulpit, where you can speak to your audience… you’re going to get attention. Your audience should be captivated, interested, and want to learn more.

The next level is to let other people know about it. Contact some general news sites, or other design blogs. Branch out and visit other places, so you’ll get noticed. If the content is good, people will come.

Are Bloggers Journalists: Are Blogs new Journalism?

Is blogging the new form of Journalism? Should bloggers be held to the same standards as the media? Those questions were asked of me recently in an email, and raise a lot of food for thought.

I don’t know that I’d say blogging is a new form of journalism, no. Blogging is certainly a newer type of writing style. Blogging and journalism aren’t exactly the same, but they achieve the same results. A blogger writes out of passion, out of an extreme interest for a particular topic. Should a blogger then be held to the same standards as the media? I don’t think so, necessarily. I guess it depends on what your definition of a journalist is, as opposed to a blogger. The only difference I can see between the two is content. They’re both there to produce content. Bloggers write because they want to. Journalists write to get paid, because it is their job.

How many times have you had this happen? I’ll get a phone call from someone who wants to interview me, or include me in a story. They’ll take up a few hours of my time, asking tons of questions. Then, of course, they use only one thing I said or the story/comments aren’t used correctly. How many times have you been watching television, and the reporter just totally gets it wrong. You’re yelling at the tv, telling the person on the program that they are wrong! It happens all the time.

This is the main difference I see between bloggers and journalists. Bloggers tend to write what they know, think and feel. Journalists are supposed to give facts, and unfortunately don’t always get them correct.

In many ways, the Blogosphere is like this huge editorial board. If a blogger comes out with something excellent, it will spread like wildfire. It will be validated. Many people feel that bloggers should be held to the same standards as the media. But… what makes “the media”? Heck, I am the media as much as anyone else is. So who draws the line? Who decides what is journalism, and what is merely blogging? Who is the boss when it comes to standards for sets of people?

How do you Choose to use Twitter?

Twitter, of course, is a type of Social Networking site where you can let people know what you’re up to at any given time. You can quickly and easily tell people what you’re thinking, feeling and doing! Everyone uses Twitter in a different way, for different things. How do you Twitter?

Being away from home visiting my brother in Iowa right now, I decided to Twitter and let my local friends know that I’m in town. After seeing my Twitter message, several local friends contacted me, and we arranged a get-together. I came up with a top five uses of Twitter to share with you.

Putting together a “Twee-up” or get-together. This will allow you to meet people that you have a lot in common with. This will let you broaden your horizons, and you’ll meet people you never would have otherwise.
Crowd-sourcing questions and answers. I’ve thought about developing a service around this at some point. This is also known as the “lazy web”. You can use Twitter to quickly get answers when you don’t have time to do a lot of research.
Airing grievances. When I’m on Twitter and I feel frustrated with a product or service, I’ll throw it out there. You never know who is going to see your Tweet. You may just accomplish something with a company.
Explore new people. You come in contact with people you would have otherwise never met. You will open your mind to new ideas and ways of thinking.
Alleviating boredom There is always something new and entertaining on Twitter to read, and links to click. You can discover websites and things you may not have ever thought of before!

Are Those “Free iPod” Websites Legit or a Scam?

You know the sites. You see them everywhere. “Sign up and get five of your friends to sign up… and you’ll win!” It’s not as easy as they make it sound. With so many sites who do the same thing, you’ll have a hard time trying to find even five who want to sign up under you.

I received an email earlier in the week from Tom, asking me if these “freebie” sites are legitimate or not. I personally tiptoe very cautiously around things like these. The odds are not in your favor that you’ll really get something for free. It’s quite difficult to get enough people to buy in to whatever it is the site in question is selling or advertising. Most people will fail in getting the ‘free’ product. Yes… there are legitimate sites giving away real products. Just read the fine print. Make sure you fully understand the requirements that are laid out prior to getting involved. Heck… why not ask your friends BEFORE you sign up if they’re even willing to follow your lead and try to get something for nothing?

Don’t throw away your money. Be smart. Stay away from all those scams out there.

Have you Ever had to Travel at the Last Minute?

Travel can be expensive, and last-minute travel is even worse! If you’ve ever had to do this, you know it can be a major pain in the pocketbook. I’m in Iowa with my family, and it was a last-minute trip. I had to change plans that were already in place to something completely different in order to come home to Iowa when I did on Friday.

It was costly, to say the least. But, I do have five tips that I jotted down to hopefully save you some money if you ever have to book a last-minute trip.

Search every website that you know of. Don’t just go to one site. That’s crazy. Costs will be different on every site. Even if they pull from the same data, you never know which will have the best cost.
Let them choose the times if you’re flexible. This is a big tip, because it can spell the difference between spending a thousand dollars, and spending three hundred.
Make more connecting flights if you need to. I prefer to fly direct. But if it means a savings a few hundred dollars… I’ll make connecting flights.
Call the airline’s hot line. They may have some kind of special last-minute rate for you. I know it’s possible to get discounts if you’ve had a death in the family, for instance. Ponzi and I were planning to travel elsewhere already. I called the airport, explained my situation. The airline was fantastic. They canceled our other tickets and refunded most of them. They also helped me get a lower rate on my tickets to Iowa, as it was an emergency situation. So call the airline. You may be happily surprised.
Check nearby airports, and possibly drive the remainder. I could have rented a car and driven it home, had a connecting flight cost a lot more. You can literally save hundreds of dollars this way.

All in all, any travel is expensive these days. Do your research, and try to be flexible when at all possible. This can mean the difference of several hundred dollars.

Are There Computer, Technology and Internet Ethics?

Are Ethics important… especially in relation to Technology. I had an email from Justin, asking questions about Ethics on the Internet.

How would you define the computer Ethics in today’s digital world? Honesty and Transparency. Those are likely the terms you’ll hear thrown about in relation to Ethics. You must be transparent and honest about the things you are doing. The tools to publish are easier to access, and more affordable these days. Ethics isn’t always inherent. It comes down to trusting the person who may be doing or saying something. If you’ve run across a blog post that’s a raving review of a new product… how do you know they have any credibility? How do you know it’s not a paid endorsement if it isn’t disclosed? That’s the point… it wasn’t disclosed. You just have to trust that the author is telling the truth. I tell people exactly what’s going on… I don’t hide anything, much to many people’s chagrin.
Is it important for Social Networking sites to enforce Ethical behavior on said sites? If you’re promoting anything that may be considered illegal, then yes. Sites like YouTube must take care of those issues. Also keep in mind that each website you sign up for has Terms of Use. If you violate those, then the sites can and will pull your content from public view. I’m under the belief that a community will raise more red flags than a website itself. Thankfully, the general population cries “FOUL” when seeing illegal and unethical content. When it comes down to personal attacks… that is unethical behavior. If you don’t like someone because of something they believe in, respond to them appropriately. Attack the opinion, never the person.
Is there a true code of Ethics regarding computer use and practices of it on the Web? You may have seen the movie “Office Space”. It was justified by the perpetrators of this white-collar crime that it’s “only pennies” that they were taking. However, it’s not Ethical behavior. They were stealing money that they weren’t entitled to have. The Code of Ethics that one might adhere to depends on the tool, the technology and the community in which they exist. If you’re going to try to enforce Ethics inside of a community who has none… you’re fighting a losing battle unfortunately. How do you feel when someone creates a piece of Malware? Does that person have Ethics? Maybe they have a different perspective. Where do you draw the line? Who are we to decide what someone else’s Code of Ethics should be?

This is one thing that keeps me live streaming.. it keeps me honest. The Blogosphere keeps everyone honest. If I do or say something wrong… believe me, I hear about it. I get upset more than you would believe when someone accuses me of something I didn’t do. I have a hard time getting past that hurdle. I admit when I’m wrong. I will eat Crow when I need to be. If I made a mistake on the Web, the mistake is there. It’s done. It can’t be removed.

I try my best to live my life by the Golden Rule. “Do unto others…” I give everyone that trust until it’s broken. It’s gotten me in trouble in the past. There are many people out there who can’t be trusted, unfortunately. But then again… there are so many who can be.

Do You Protect Yourself from Identity Theft?

Identity theft is rampant these days. Your information can be taken faster than you can blink. However, there are several very easy ways to protect yourself. Are you careful enough? Do you know how to protect your identity? I received the following tips in an email, specifically related to tax return theft.

When storing a copy of your tax return on your computer, try to protect it with a complex password.
If you do decide to delete the file, either use the free Eraser for Windows, or Secure Delete in Mac OS X. Make sure you securely and properly delete the files. Don’t just put them in the Recycle bin. Make sure they are completely gone.
Ignore all refund or rebate emails that claim to come from the IRS. Never click the links in emails if they claim to be coming from an official source, unless you know for a fact it comes from who it says. My suggestion is to verify any warning on the IRS website. This will allow you to make sure if something is legit or not.
If someone calls you claiming to need to verify your information… hang up on them. DONT give them information. You aren’t verifying anything. Don’t give out any information or at your door, no matter how legit it seems. Check it out first.
Check your credit report through all the agencies periodically. Keep on top of it. If you notice a discrepancy… challenge it immediately. You never really know when your credit report can turn around and bite you. Innocent mistakes can and do happen, and affect your credit adversely. So I recommend checking it at least once a year, if not a couple of times.

These are some things in relation to tax season, but apply to every day of the year. Only deal with people, companies and websites that you know and trust. Don’t count on anyone but yourself to keep you safe.

What do you Need for a Wired Home Network?

Mattstech writes: “Thought I’d share a basic top 6 list on how to hardwire a home network. For power users like me, wireless just doesn’t provide the speed and reliability that I need. I ran some CAT5e over to my room about a month ago, and wanted to share some tips with the community on how to get started.”

Get the cable and accessories. You can usually buy network cable by the foot at home improvement stores, such as Lowe’s and Home Depot. The big decision here is: how much and what type. As far as quantity goes, you could measure exactly where the cable will be run, but an educated guess can be just as effective. However, it might help to overshoot your estimate by about 10%, so that you don’t end up missing some cable. As for type, there are two major categories of network cable: CAT5e and CAT6. The main difference between the two is related to data transmission capabilities. CAT5e is usually capable of approximately 100 MHz of bandwidth, while CAT6 comes in around the 200 MHz mark. Yes, CAT6 is better, but it is also more expensive. If CAT6 is in your price range (check with your local home improvement stores), by all means go for it. If not, CAT5e will still produce excellent speeds, especially when compared to wireless. There are also some accessories you will need to purchase. Pick up some low-voltage wall boxes (one for each wall plate), RJ-45 jacks, and faceplates to cover it all up with. You also might want to think about getting some fish tape or glow sticks to make it easier to run the cable down the wall.
Cut the hole(s) for the wall jack(s). Before you cut anything, be sure to check where the studs are in the wall. You can do this by either using a stud finder, or just by knocking on the wall. If it sounds hollow, there is no stud in that location. If it sounds (and feels) solid, don’t cut there - you’ve got a stud! Once you’ve found an appropriate location to cut, hold up the low voltage plate to the wall, trace the outline, and score it lightly. Next, cut along the lines you’ve scored until the piece of sheetrock falls out. It helps to have a keyhole saw to do this, but a serrated kitchen knife will also do the job. It helps to pick a location close to other wall plates, such as cable and/or power. That way you won’t have to worry about drilling a hole in the attic to get the cable out from inside the wall.
Insert the low-voltage box(es). If you scored and cut correctly, then the low-voltage wall box should fit snug inside the hole. Once it is in, fold up the pieces of metal hanging down to secure the box.
Run the cable. Take the roll of cable you purchased and use a fish tape/glow stick to fish one end of the cable through the hole, and up into the wall. Again, if the wall plate is not close to others, you may need to drill a hole to get the cable up out of the wall. Otherwise, you should be able to run it through the existing hole. Once the cable is in the attic, continue to pull, and trail the cable over to where the other hole is located. Remember to run in wide swoops - don’t make abrupt turns and/or create kinks in the cable, as this will result in decreased performance. Once you reach the location of the other hole, run the cable down the (hopefully) pre-drilled hole and into the wall. Fish it out, and….your cable is run!
Wire the jacks. In a standard ethernet cable, there are usually eight wires, as described below:
- White/Orange
- Orange
- White/Green
- Blue
- White/Blue
- Green
- White/Brown
- Brown
For RJ-45, there are two major wiring schemes that specify where the wires should be placed in the jack : (T568)A and (T568)B. If you’re wiring from computer to computer, use A. If you’re going from computer to hub, use B. The B scheme is demonstrated above in the list above, but most jacks have a label on the side with both schemes listed. The jack should have come with a punch down tool to use when seating the wires inside the appropriate slots. Once you’ve decided on a scheme, simply sit the wire on top of the corresponding slot, push down with the tool, and repeat for each wire.
Finish it up. Pop the jack inside the faceplate’s hole, and then screw the faceplate into the low-voltage box. Finally, go get some patch cables and connect your components!

It’s that time of year again. It’s time for Nature to bloom, for allergies to go crazy, and for Spring cleaning to commence. How do you clean? Have you ever considered cleaning Geek style? I know the Windows need to be washed. The OS X needs to be flipped. And of course, Linux likely needs a batting down. Ok, ok… that’s not the case. But chances are, your family is bugging you to do some type of chore. Here are some tips to help you not only clean and do chores, but to remain Geeky, as well.

Kill the dust bunnies! I don’t mean the ones under the bed. I mean the ones under your computer. Open up that case, take some compressed air… and clean that puppy out! If the air has been tilted the wrong way, it can have some moisture coming out at first. Always point the can of air away from the pc and blow it a bit before using it inside your case.
Go through and rename your photos and videos. As soon as you copy them off your digital camera, you have names like “IMG_001″. How annoying! People upload the files with those names. It cracks me up. Rename those photos now, before you don’t remember who or what they are.
Label your cables! I bet you have a million cables that goes from one thing to another, to the plugin, and back to another device. It can be a pain if something comes undone and you don’t remember exactly where it goes.
Alphabetize or Colorize your media library I don’t mean the ones in your computer… I mean the ones on shelves or in drawers. How often have you gone to open a DVD, and it’s either not there, or it’s the wrong video? It’s quite frustrating. Re-arrange your media on the shelves, and then order it in any way that is convenient for you. Heck, you could even order them by Genre!
Recycle old software or the boxes How many of you have an MS Dos 5 box sitting on your shelf? It’s time to let it go. If you have Office95 sitting on your shelf… get rid of it! I mean, seriously. Free yourself!
